Set in the nineteenth century, Huckleberry Finn is a free-spirited boy of 14 years whose guardian Widow Douglas wants to civilise him which he thinks will curtail his freedom. In order to escape, he decides to travel along the Mississippi River along with a slave boy Jim who is also a runaway. Together they visit many towns along the river and have various encounters. Though written in a time of severe prejudice against coloured people, Twain has projected a strong anti-racist ideology through the book.
