Atonement follows young Briony, who catches an intense sexual encounter between her elder sister, Cecilia and Robbie Turner, a young man who works for her father and whose education is funded by her father as well. However, after this encounter, Briony suspects Robbie of being something more and a chain of events leads to Robbie being jailed. The whole novel is about Briony realising her guilt and atoning for them. Hence, the name Atonement.
