1. Aarya
Aarya is based on the Dutch series Penoza and is a gripping thriller that keeps your eyes glued to it till the end. It enumerates the experiences of a mother who has been caught off guard after the mysterious death of her husband and is now solely responsible for protecting her children from her unknown enemies. The climax is indeed disturbing but its unpredictability will blow your mind.
2. Special Ops
Himmat Singh, a senior analyst and logistics head working with India’s Research and Analysis Wing is in search of a terrorist who was behind the attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001 and a few other that followed. This man is a mystery to some but Himmat is convinced that he exists and is planning something major. Therefore, he has deployed a team of five secret agents in different parts of the world who help him in looking for the mastermind.
3. She
‘She’ portrays the life of an Indian female police constable who works as an undercover agent for the Anti- Narcotics Group in order to reach a drug lord. She poses as a prostitute and is given rigorous training for the errand she is about to run. While this is just a part of her job, she slowly delves into this role and uncovers her underlying femininity and desires.
4. Inside Edge
A sports- drama that showcases what takes place behind the scenes in the glamorous world of cricket. It brings the concept of match-fixing to light and how every move is manipulated by affluent personalities. The team Mumbai Mavericks suddenly witnesses a change in its ownership which leads to a conflict between the owners and eventually the team as some of the players are involved in the process of match-fixing.
5. Delhi Crime
This show is based on the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case and portrays the struggles of the then Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and her team while they were given the task of finding the culprits behind this horrific act. The detailed investigation that took place is projected through this show and also brings to light how the society perceives women, even the ones who have been victims of such brutalities.
6. Paatal Lok
Loosely based on Tarun Tejpal’s novel, ‘The Story of My Assassins’, this Indian web television series depicts how the entire plot is twisted after an assassination attempt goes wrong. This high profile case is taken up by inspector Hathiram Chaudhary who is seen as incompetent by his contemporaries but his investigation reveals certain shocking details that would have otherwise remained suppressed. ‘Patal Lok’ received a favourable response from the audience but was also ridden with controversies.
7. Sacred Games
Ganesh Gaitonde, a criminal overlord who managed to escape the police for years after committing a series of offences, contacts police officer Sartaj Singh and gives him a tip regarding a plan that can potentially destroy Mumbai. Therefore, Sartaj Singh embarks on this journey and follows the path that Ganesh Gaitonde set for him. As he proceeds further with the case, he uncovers various secrets about the criminal as well as his own life.
8. Lucifer
This American urban fantasy television series portrays the life of Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil. Lucifer was banished from Heaven as a punishment for betrayal and therefore ends up in hell. However, he soon abandons hell in order to move to Los Angeles, where he establishes a night club and works as a consultant to the LAPD at the same time. This show was highly appreciated by the viewers and gained popularity through the subsequent seasons.
9. The Blacklist
A crime thriller that revolves around a former U.S. Navy officer, Raymond Reddington who turned into a wanted criminal twenty years ago. In an unusual state of affairs, he voluntarily surrenders to the FBI claiming that he has compiled a list of the most dangerous criminals in the world, which he is willing to reveal in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Moreover, he insists on working with Elizabeth Keen, a rookie FBI profiler. ‘The Blacklist’ received mixed reviews from the audience.
10. The Witcher
This show is based on a fantasy series of novels, ‘The Witcher’ authored by the Polish writer, Andrzej Sapkowski. It follows the legend of Geralt of Rivia, a mutant monster hunter who is constantly struggling to carve a place for himself in this world. According to him, this world consists of people who often prove to be worse than beasts. The show received positive feedback but it does not classify as a must-watch.
11. House of Cards
The series depicts the life of Frank Underwood, a Democrat and his wife Claire Underwood. After he is passed over for appointment as the Secretary of State, he is determined to avenge those who betrayed him. His wife who is equally ambitious and manipulative accompanies him through this journey while he rises to supremacy. This American political thriller is based on the 1989 novel, ‘House of Cards’ and explores themes such as power, betrayal, manipulation and revenge.
12. Homeland
Inspired by the Israeli series, ‘Prisoners of War’, this American spy thriller revolves around a CIA agent, Carrie Mathison and Nicholas Brody, a U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper. Carrie is in search of an American prisoner who is a potential threat to the United States as he may have joined forces with Al-Qaeda. She is highly suspicious of Nicholas Brody who was held captive by Al-Qaeda and was released after eight years.
13. Fargo
This American television series was inspired by the 1996 film of the same name. Each season of this show depicts a different era, storyline and mostly involves new characters. ‘Fargo’ commences portraying the life of an insurance agent, Lester Nygaard whose life is filled with monotony and the presence of an uninteresting wife. However, certain developments in the plot take place after he meets Lorne Malvo and accompany him through his search.
