A major awards ceremony, the Golden Globe Awards have always sought out the most invigorating, intriguing and moving movies that were created in a certain year. This year too, in 2021, they’ve done the same and awarded the most powerful movies made in 2021. Without further ado, here is the list:
Best Picture Drama:
The Power of The Dog
In Montana, the Burbank Brothers are rich ranchers. Phil Burbank is smart, cunning and a hard cowboy. When his brother brings home a wife and her son, he bullies them and insults them. This becomes a regular happening until one day, he softens and opens up. An intriguing movie, it will keep you interested in what happens next.
CODA
The movie is about a Child of Deaf Adults, abbreviated as CODA. It follows Ruby, her love for music and her dilemma of choosing her career over her parents when the family business starts to sink. A heartwarming family movie about the 1960s, Belfast is a mixture of different emotions. It depicts everything about a family’s survival, their love and their trials and tribulations. It is based on true stories from director Kenneth Branagh’s childhood and is essentially a part of him. A beautiful drama movie that is also the winner of several accolades, Belfast is definitely worth a watch.
Best Picture Musical/ Comedy:
West Side Story
West Side Story is a readaptation of the 1957 musical and follows the same story about the two rival teenager gangs called the Jets and the Sharks. It is a story about love, and how it triumphs over everything, even hate. Rivalries will get over, relations will be re-established and love will win again. An enjoyable watch, the music and dance sequences will keep you grooving.
Cyrano
Cyrano is a popular writer for hire in the town, and also a swordsman. However, he feels that his appearance renders him unloveable in front of his friend Roxanne. He decides to woo her through wordplay using his love letters, but she falls for someone else. How will Cyrano de Bergerac now manage to get Roxanne back again?
Licorice Pizza
Licorice Pizza follows the vintage romance of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine, as they were adolescents and were growing up. The story follows the magical moments, trials and betrayals of first love. With its romantic walks and aesthetic feels, it will not only make you fall in love with the cinematography but will also make you nostalgic. A romantic watch to see with your significant other!
Don’t Look Up
In this comedy sci-fi movie, a graduate student looking at a comet discovers that it is about to collide with Earth. Her astronomy professor agrees with her assessment and decide to tell the world about it. So, they both embark on a journey to warn the world of the mishap before it is too late. But it won’t be easy! A hilarious watch that has a spectacular ensemble cast, Don’t Look Up is undoubtedly one of the biggest movies by Netflix this year!
Tick, Tick... Boom!
A young musical and theatre playwright, Jon ponders different questions as he approaches the age of 30. Just as he is about to present his first play, ‘Superbia’, he begins asking different questions and even goes through writer’s block. Everyone in his life is moving ahead, while he keeps thinking about how much time we have for doing something great. The movie features brilliant acting by Andrew Garfield, and makes us think about what greatness we are destined for!

Drive My Car
Adapted from Haruki Murakami’s short story from the book ‘Men Without Women’, the movie features an actor whose wife dies two years ago. He is provided with a female driver, who is stoic and reserved. A beautiful story about the trials and tribulations in a man’s life, Drive My Car captures Murakami’s words and emotions beautifully.
Compartment No.6
Compartment No.6 revolves around the romantic encounter between a Finnish woman and a Russian miner as they have to journey together around the Arctic. The movie is aesthetically beautiful, and although the formula is a bit overused, the movie is still able to capture the beauty behind human relationships and connections.
The Hand of God
Set in Naples during the 1980s, The Hand of God follows a personal story of joyous and upsetting experiences, love, loss and ambition. It depicts the story of a young boy Fabietto Schisa - his love for football and his wish of taking it up as a profession. But, this soon changes as he is forced to confront tragedy and his future is shifted as a filmmaker.
A Hero
From the brilliant mind of director Asghar Farhadi, A Hero is another movie that captures the intrinsic and complex nature of human behaviour. It shows us Rahim, a person in debt, and the ways he takes to pay off that debt so that the police complaint against him is taken off. However, life isn’t that simple. He encounters many twists and turns in this gripping tale, and Farhadi does it again with the same old charm!
Parallel Mothers
Pedro Almodovar brilliantly captures the story of two mothers, who meet by chance in a hospital while giving birth. One mother is a middle-aged woman, played by Cruz, while the other is a teenager played by Smit. With moments that can be labelled as genuine, raw and sentimental, Parallel Mothers tells a story that has never been told before in this form.
