Synopsis
The movie is based on the novel Without Remorse written by Tom Clancy. It is a spy thriller that revolves around the character of John Kelly, a navy seal whose life is turned upside down after his pregnant wife and his fellow soldiers are murdered. He is shattered but wants to avenge the deaths of his close ones. John Kelly with a team is sent on a mission to bring the supposed killer to justice. But it doesn't span out the way he thought it would.
Highlights
A spycraft thriller, Without Remorse, starts with John Kelly and his team of soldiers conducting an extraction of a CIA Operative from Syria. Upon successful extraction, the Navy seals are back to their routine life in America. But everything changes when the Navy seals involved in the extraction are killed one after the other. The next target being John Kelly but the witty soldier survives a close call. But he isn't able to save his pregnant wife Pam who is brutally killed in the shootout. John with a team is sent to Murmansk (Russia) for an operation to bring back the killer. But what then transpires brings a shock to John Kelly. It is when the element of thriller starts to kick in.
Positives
Michael B Jordan is such a great actor. He's carrying a film that otherwise has a poor plot and lacks in many departments. Michael has done a great job on his part. Even the supporting cast has done a terrific job especially the female navy seal played by Jodie Turner-Smith.
Action sequences are so thrilling to watch in the movie especially the one in which the plane carrying John Kelly and the team crashes in the Barents Sea. It looked so real. These shots have been so well crafted in the movie that any action fan would love to watch. It takes a lot of work to bring such quality and the management has done a great job in this department.
Negatives
The film is based on Tom Clancy's novel Without Remorse. The novel has a perfect build-up and storyline but its adaptation to the movie has been fairly poor. The fans of the novel are certainly not happy and rightfully so, with the way the adaptation has taken place on the big screen. The writers should have done better.
The movie is too predictable for a thriller story. It is the usual decades-old Cold War kind of story that happens in the backdrop of geopolitics between two rival nations U.S and Russia. Whereas one soldier does all the work and saves the nation from evil Russia. How many times have we seen such a plot on the screens? The creators should bring something refreshing to the screen.
Conclusion
The movie is watchable for its action sequences and Michael Jordan's brilliant on-screen performance. If you can do away with the slow burn and poor buildup then bring your popcorn and start enjoying this thriller.
